FLUTTER ALONG TO A LITTLE SAPPHIRE
A favorite spot along Main St., USA
BY CARLY CYLINDER
South Bay’s ode to Mayberry, the quaint upper/middle class city of El Segundo is brimming with the most business headquarters off of Sepulveda, and a few gems sprawled along aptly named Main St. The Blue Butterfly, off of Grand, is one such sapphire; quaint, brick walls, a solid menu, and an always patient barista.
Blue Butterfly is where the locals grab a cup of Joe; a selection of three types of coffee named after streets in El Segundo are available as well typical coffee drinks such as a mocha, latte, double espresso, $1.75. The chai, made from organic Oregon Chai, is more subtle than say Starbucks. I recommend having the drink served in an oversized mug, both economical and homey.
If you get there in the afternoon, chances are after school kids and moms will be getting a snack, teenagers will be doing homework and gossiping, and senior citizens will be playing chess or other available boards games kept there.
The food is clean, simple, and fresh. A fluffy, perfectly cooked omelet filled with your choice of three toppings (meats, veggies, and cheese) is served with plentiful chunks of fresh fruit and dry whole grain toast, and a side of hot sauce, about $5.95. Pastry cases are stocked with cereal, bagels and cream cheese, $1.75, or any way you like it for about $4.95, and pastries are available, along with granola and vegan cookies. For lunch, paninis toasted on buttermilk bread are a popular choice; filled with such combos as ham and mozzarella, caprese, Canadian bacon, Swiss, and onions, $5.9d. The breakfast is so satisfying without breaking your wallet that you will be happy to have stopped along Main St, and will soon become a regular, nodding your head to the passerby.
Blue Buttery Coffee Co.: 351 Main St., El Segundo, (310) 640-7687. Open Mon-Sun, 7am-7pm.
